We’ve been working on an experimental animation project throughout the term using different mark making techniques. Taking inspiration from artists such as Stan Brakhage and Harry Smith, the students have been working with similar techniques painting and drawing on clear acetate to mimic the technique of working directly on to 35mm film. These ‘film strips’ have been scanned in, where the students are currently working with video editing software to create their moving image sequences. During this process, lots of the students have been coming up with their own narratives to describe the abstract visuals and will later be adding their own sound to the films. In the last couple of weeks we’ve been testing out other techniques to create different textures including monotype printing and macro photography.
